Purpose: to stop drunk driving, underage drinking, and drug abuse among youth
Members: 50 state groups, 25,000 local groups comprising several million students at any given time
This national student group aims to promote awareness of issues related to drunk driving among people ages 15 to 24, for whom motor vehicle accidents involving alcohol are a leading cause of death. SADD’s branches operate in middle schools, high schools, and colleges. Its activities include conducting educational programs, maintaining a speakers bureau, and publishing informational pamphlets. Despite the similar goals and acronyms, SADD is not affiliated with MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). The organization has many publications, including SADD in the College, SADD in the High School, and SADD Update.
Note: Local chapters are allowed to apply the SADD acronym to similar organizations, such as Students Against Drunk Driving or Students Against Doing Drugs, as long as the group retains the basic objectives of SADD.
